Lexus CT 200h: Have it all

5 August 2011

Lexus enters a completely new market segment for the luxury brand with the introduction of the CT 200h. The premium hatchback is the latest in an aggressively growing Lexus range and becomes the first full hybrid vehicle to be launched at the heart of the small luxury car segment.

Since re-launching in 2006, Lexus has expanded its core model line-up of four models to nine models and 22 derivatives. The expansion into new markets has included entering the convertible segment with the IS 250C, the performance sedan market with the exciting IS-F, as well as offering the highly successful luxury off-road LX570.

The latest offering allows a completely new set of younger customers to enter the world of Lexus. At the same time it expands on the brand’s hybrid leadership in South Africa by bringing its range offering to four. Lexus sells more hybrids in the SA market than any other car brand with full hybrid derivatives of the GS sedan, RX SUV, and LS limousine already available.

Lexus’ first five-door hatch is set to challenge the status quo of the sub-premium segment. The size, luxury packaging and ultra-low fuel consumption address the key preferences of a young and highly discerning customer base. At the same time, no compromise has been made in the levels of refinement and driving pleasure that are synonymous with Lexus.

Elegance and sophistication were the key focus points for the Lexus design team in the conception of the CT 200h’s design, which is the latest interpretation of Lexus’s L-finesse design language. Supporting the aim of bringing a younger generation of customers to the brand, the intention was to give the new car a dynamic quality.

The CT 200h has been developed specifically to deliver superior handling, a rewarding drive and the level of ride comfort expected of a Lexus. Built on an entirely new platform, the CT 200h has been given the lowest possible centre of gravity and features a high-rigidity lightweight bodyshell. Even the height, position and structure of the driver’s seat have been precisely determined to contribute to the car’s balance and enhance the driving experience. It is typically a Lexus.

The Lexus CT 200h is a full hybrid, capable of running on its petrol engine or electric motor alone, or with both working in combination. The system offers owners the full benefits that hybrid has to offer, unlike many mild hybrids currently entering the market.

Combining a 1.8-litre VVT-i Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a powerful electric motor, the CT 200h delivers 100kW of total system output. The sophisticated petrol engine delivers 73kW at 5 200 rpm and 142Nm between 2 800 and 4 400 rpm. But the real performance benefits are arrived at courtesy of the 60kW of electric power on board and additional 207Nm that allow 2,0-litre petrol performance and competitive turbodiesel torque.

Ultimate efficiency gains are borne out by its class-leading emissions of just 94 g/km of CO2, but where it will directly affect your pocket is in the 4,1 l/100km combined cycle fuel economy, which could save over R3 000 a year in fuel over conventional rivals.

The CT 200h’s 100kW total system output and characteristic hybrid torque endow the Lexus hatch with relevant performance for the urban set that command the sub-premium hatch segment. With impressive alacrity off the line, the full hybrid technology really comes into its own, while the refinement will ensure a positive mind-set for those conscious of efficiency in everything they do – be it being connected across multiple communication channels to streamline their work life, or building their new pad in the city with innovative tech.

Continuing the state-of-the-art technology, the CT 200h uses artificial intelligence to maximise efficiency where the human element just cannot compete: the Constantly Variable Transmission optimises petrol engine revs to each and every driving condition, while synchronising petrol and electric power that best suits the occasion.

The Lexus CT 200h has been engineered to perform in two different driving “moods”, Relaxing or Dynamic, supported by four selectable driving modes: NORMAL, EV, ECO and SPORT. The different modes make a marked difference on the characteristics of the hatch. ECO mode softens throttle response and creates a relaxed environment ideally suited to congested traffic and maximised fuel efficiency, accompanied by a hybrid power meter on the dash and soft blue lighting. SPORT mode on the other hand instantly sharpens throttle, steering and driving control system responses, while changing the dash to an exciting red hue and converting the hybrid power meter into a conventional rev counter almost LFA-style. It transforms the car into a dynamic urban package of premium enjoyment.

Two models of the CT 200h are immediately available, the CT 200h S already boasting an enticing luxury features list befitting a Lexus. A full leather interior, beautifully stitched and trimmed, dual zone climate control with heated seats, electric mirrors, keyless start, automatic headlights with daytime running lights, USB connectivity and Bluetooth with voice command are just some of the features. The S is outwardly identified by 16-inch alloy wheels.

Because the CT 200h is a dynamic package of handling and driver enjoyment, Lexus also offers the car in F-Sport guise, differentiated by 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, and a larger boot spoiler. The luxury specification also gets enhanced by sports seats, the driver’s eight-way electrically adjustable with lumbar support, and cruise control. It also benefits from the addition of front and rear performance dampers.

As an option, the CT 200h F-Sport can be ordered with a Convenience Package that includes an upgraded sound system with four additional speakers and an amplifier, Smart Entry, rain sensing wipers, a full colour monitor with HDD navigation and voice command with Remote Touch, and a reverse camera with back-guide monitor. A moon roof is also optional on the F-Sport model.

The CT 200h makes no compromise when it comes to safety and has scored five stars in EuroNCAP. It features eight airbags, including knee bags for driver and front seat passenger. ABS with EBD and Brake Assist is supported by Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control. ISO-Fix anchors in the rear and child locks on the rear doors, along with a front passenger airbag deactivation switch ensures safety for all occupants. Even the rear seats are included in the seatbelt warning.

The Lexus CT 200h is a major step forward for the sub-premium hatchback segment, bringing full hybrid technology as a mainstream alternative to the petrol and diesel products currently on offer with the real-world benefits of flexibility and economy. And its sophisticated efficiencies make an indelible impact on pollution without you realising it. It also opens the legendary Lexus ownership experience to a broadening set of customers who will now be able to understand the satisfaction and quality independently recognised as the industry benchmark.

The Lexus CT 200h is backed by a four years/100 000km manufacturer warranty and full four years/100 000km service plan. For more information or to arrange a drive experience, visit www.lexus.co.za  or www.haveitall.co.za. Alternatively, join Lexus on facebook at www.facebook.com/LexusSouthAfrica.
